Consul General Lu Xu Visited East China Immigrant Society of Edmonton
On October 1st, 2017, Consul General Lu Xu, Deputy Consul General Gao Tingzhen came to Edmonton to participate in the celebration of the 68th Anniversary of the People's Republic of China. Consul General arrived in her office only 10 days. In order to learn more about the overseas Chinese communities in Edmonton, she drove 300 kilometers to visit the main Chinese Communities in our city, such as the Chinese Benevolent Association (CBA), Chinese Freemason Society and the Chinese Cultural Exchange Center. At 2:15 pm, Consul General Lu and her fellow colleagues, accompanied by the Chairman of CBA Michael Lee, came to the East China Immigrant Society of Edmonton (ECISE). On behalf of ECISE, Mr. Jim Ma (Chairman of ECISE) briefly introduced the members, directors and volunteer representatives of the East China Immigrant Society of Edmonton. He also reported the work we have done for the East China Immigrant Society of Edmonton in recent years. Mr. Ma said the East China Immigrant Society of Edmonton has always received the supports from local three-level governments, as well as from the Chinese Consulate of Calgary in recent years. East China Immigrant Society of Edmonton has also participated in a number of cultural exchange activities with the motherland, to establish the friendship exchange platform from Edmonton City and many provinces/ cities in China. Mr. Ma not only reported to the Consul General Lu about the development of the community and the solidarity of the community, since solidarity is an important image of the overseas Chinese in the country of residence, but also he reported to the Consul General about the progress on the construction of our society’s building. In order to make the community organization beneficial, sustainable and healthy development, we have put efforts to purchase a new land for our society’s building. Under the co-operation with other community organizations, we are preparing to construct a new community building. The Consul General listened carefully to our plan on the community building. She smiled and said kindly: "It is not easy for you, this is a big thing. You have a great vision!" Consul General Lu said she used to work in Consulate of UK and USA, and she is very happy and willing to do the new consular work in the province of Alberta. The conversation was under a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Due to the time limited, Consul General Lu was going to visit other communities and attend a forum held by CBA. Hosted by East China Immigrants Society of Edmonton (ECISE), the 1st Cross Canada Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai Immigrants Associations Conference was held in Edmonton during June 6th to 9th, 2013. Twelve guests from Montreal Shanghai Kiangsu Chekiang Association, Toronto Shanghai Students Union, Vancouver Shanghai Business Association, Vancouver Zhejiang Association, Vancouver Ningbo Friendship Society, and Calgary Jiang Zhe Shanghai Association attended this conference. Federation of Ottawa Chinese Canadian Organizations was unable to attend; they sent congratulations to the conference by e-mail. The assembly also received the congratulation letters for the grand opening from the Overseas Chinese Affairs Offices of Ningbo Municipal People's Government, Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, Shanghai Municipal People's Government, Zhejiang Overseas Exchange Association and Shanghai Overseas Exchange Association.
In the morning of June 7th, the symposium of the 1st Cross Canada Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai Immigrants Associations Conference was held at the Sutton Place Hotel in Downtown Edmonton. The theme of the conference is enhancement of cultural exchange between Canada and China. As Yangtze triangle of China is the important international door, lots of intelligent people come from this area, especially in Canada, more and more people with defferent talents come from this area. Both the Jiangsu-Zhejiang provinces and Shanghai Immigrant Chinese communities have played a very important role in Canada. The Cross Canada Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai Immigrants Associations Conference would like to establish a platform in Edmonton for mutual communication to promote economic and cultural exchange between Canada and China. After warmly plenary discussion and mutual consultation the consensus was reached.
In the evening of June 7th, the conference banquet was held at Dynasty Century Palace Restaurant.Mr. Allan Mah and Ms. Jane Cheng performed as masters of ceremonies. The assembly began with Canadian national anthem and the Chinese national anthem. Lion dance greeted all the guests. The president of ECISE, Mr. Jim Ma gave welcoming remarks. Three levels of Canadian government, Edmonton city councilors Jane Batty, Alberta Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk and the Member of Parliament Laurie Hawn gave a speech, respectively. Deputy Consul General Xianmin Wang from Chinese Consulate General in Calgary presented a speech as well.
A variety of cultural and art performances presented at the banquet, which included martial arts, fencing, Peking opera, chorus, street dance, as well as vocal duet and female vocal solo. The dinner party finally ended with a few lucky draws. During the conference, the guests and delegates had sightseeing in Edmonton city. They visited ECISE office and West Edmonton Mall as well.
On June 8th, the delegates visited Calgary Jiang Zhe Shanghai Association and Chinese Consulate General in Calgary. The Consulate General Yongfeng Liu met the delegates with enthusiasm. They posed for photos with General Liu. The Delegates visited the famous Banff National Park and enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Lake Louis during June 8th and 9th. Thus, the 1st Cross Canada Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai Immigrants Associations Conference was successfully concluded with unanimous agreement and praise by plenary delegates.
Centennial Celebration of Edmonton Chinatown
On July 2, 2012, Edmonton Chinatown centennial celebration was held at Emperor’s Palace Restaurant at 7:00 p.m. The celebration began with the Canada National Anthem.
The welcoming speech was made by the president of the Chinese Benevolent Association (CBA) of Edmonton, Mrs. Mei Hung. On behalf of three levels of Canadian Government, Councillor Kerry Diotte, City of Edmonton, Hon. Thomas Lukaszuk, Deputy Premier of Alberta, and Hon. Laurie Hawn, MP for Edmonton Centre, showed greetings for 100th anniversary of Edmonton Chinatown. Consul General Mrs. Liu Yongfeng, General Consulate of People’s Republic of China in Calgary, presented a congratulation speech as well.
Honorary advisor of CBA, Mr. Frank Gee, reviewed and reflected the 100 years history of Edmonton Chinatown. Awards were presented in recognition of the VIP community organizations and individuals who had made outstanding contributions to the Chinese community. The congregation was standing up and keeping silence for one minute to cherish the memory of our ancestors contributed to the Chinese community.
During the ten courses fine dinner, the congregation enjoyed the entertainments including Lion dance, performed by the Hong Mun Athletic Club, Mongolia dance and picking tea-leaves dance, performed by Alberta Chinese Dance Association. Mr. Joe Zhao played the flute solo, while Liu’s three sisters played erhu Trio. One old lady and one old man who were both over one hundred years old were invited to the dinner to cut the centennial birthday cake.
Celebration of the 61st Anniversary for the establishment of People’s Republic of China
On October 1st, 2010, a dinner party was held by Edmonton Chinese Community celebrating the 61st Anniversary for the establishment of People’s Republic of China at Dynasty Restaurant, Edmonton Alberta. Consul General Liu Yongfeng, Deputy Consul GeneralWang Xianmin, Consul Li Feng from General Consulate of PRC in Calgary attended the meeting. More than 200 overseas Chinese immigrants gathered together to celebrate the festival. Consul General Liu Yongfeng gave a speech at the party. She brought us four major news.
(1) China's economy has overcome the world financial crisis and steady growth;
(2) The cross-Strait relations are further peacefully developed;
(3) China successfully hosted the 2010 Shanghai World Expo;
(4) "Chang'e-II" satellite was successfully launched. Mrs. Liu also praised that the Edmonton Chinese immigrants love their motherland. They made suggestions and contribution on the development of China and economic construction of China, and dedicated to promote the tradition of Chinese culture, Chinese language education, Chinese art and Chinese martial arts.
